Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste is the trading name for the Sustainable North Trust, a registered, charitable, environmental education trust. The programs it runs are "community enterprises" meaning that if profits are made they go to create new jobs, improve work sites and expand educational programmes. They do not go into shareholder profits.

Who We Are

  • Whangaparāoa Community Recycling Centre

The Whangaparāoa Community Recycling Centre has been running since the 1980s and is still used widely in the community. We accept most recyclable item likw cardboard, glass, paper, aluminium, cans, e-waste, batteries, car batteries and more. These are sorted on site which increases opportunities on-shore recycling.

  • Eco Shop

The Ecoshop is a community hub, where we hold workshops, provide alternatives to plastics, sell locally made goods and have a Terracycle collection point. Composting and food waste solutions options include bokashi systems and biochar.

  • Zero Waste Zero Carbon

The ZWZC Project is about teaching students the value of food scraps as a resource for composting and soil building. It is targeted at intermediate age students and runs as a facilitated programme. Funded by Foundation North. Students also learn what they can personally do to reverse climate change through practising zero waste, planting trees and building topsoil. This is funded by The Sustainable North Trust.

  • Zero Waste Events

We work with events that want to be zero waste. We provide waste services including bins, educational posters as well as capture impact data for you and your event.

  • City to Farm

City to Farm collects food scraps across north Auckland for composting on local farms. By helping businesses participate in climate change solutions, we have diverted over 100 tonnes of food scraps from landfill.

  • Eco Early Childhood Education

The Eco ECE Programme provides FREE educational activities and a customized plan to minimize waste in Early Childhood Learning Centres across the Hibiscus Coast and Bays area. This programme is funded by the Sustainable North Trust and Hibiscus Bays Local Board.

  • The Green Scheme

Green Scheme Certificates are given to business partners who are taking action and making effort to operate in a more sustainable and environmental way.

  • Party Kit Hire
